FIRST SEMESTER [SECOND SEMESTER]

Orientation
The program begins with a one-week orientation/"boot camp" that introduces students to all the resources available at IIJNM, including media mentors, software applications and computer network.

1. List of required Core Courses:

  • Reporting and Writing (for Print students) - 6 credits
  • Reporting and Writing for Broadcast (for Television and Radio students) - 6 credits
  • Reporting and Writing for Online/Multimedia (for Online/Multimedia students) - 6 credits
  • Tools of Journalism I & II (for Print students) - 4 credits
  • Tools of Television Journalism (for Television students) - 4 credits
  • Tools of Radio Journalism (for Radio students) - 4 credits
  • Tools of Online/Multimedia Journalism (for Online/Multimedia students) - 4 credits
  • Ethical and Legal Issues in Journalism (for ALL students) - 3 credits
  • Critical Thinking in Journalism - Part I (for ALL students) - 3 credits

2. Media Concentration: Students are required to choose one from the following three:

  • Print ( Newspaper and Magazine)
  • Broadcast (Television and Radio)
  • Online/Multimedia

3. Area of Specialisation: Students are required to choose one from the following:

  • Political
  • International
  • Business
  • Development

4. Electives: Students are required to choose three from the following
(please read the notes below before you choose the electives):

Group A

  • Magazine Writing - 3 credits
  • Television News Magazines & Documentary - 3 credits
  • Radio News Bulletins & Documentary - 3 credits

Group B

  • Political Reporting - 3 credits
  • Covering International News - 3 credits
  • Business and Financial Reporting - 3 credits
  • Issues in Developmental Journalism - 3 credits

Group C

  • Digital Photo Journalism - 3 credits
  • Covering Health and Environmental Issues - 3 credits

Notes:

  1. Students are required to pick the relevant media elective from Group A.
  2. Depending on the choice of Area of Specialisation, all students are required to pick the relevant elective from Group B.
  3. All students are free to choose one more elective from any of the three Groups. However Television and Radio electives are exclusive to Television and Radio students only. Students from other Media Concentration cannot take Television or Radio electives.
  4. Print students are allowed to take three electives, from any of the three Groups. However the rule of Area of Specialisation applies to them as well
