The IIJNM News Factory

Week after week, you will find the lights at the IIJNM lab on all night and the students hard at work writing, editing and designing the pages for the three publications they bring out: The Weekly Observer, Thesoftcopy and The Beat.

Week after week, they are at the news factory churning out that perfect story that makes the difference, with the right headline, the right story angle with the right picture. To the uninitiated, it would be an ordeal; but for some it is a passion.

The Weekly Observer

:: The Weekly Observer :: IIJNM Students' Weekly News PaperThe fourth batch of students have decided to add a touch of substance to their weekly newspaper by changing its name and masthead from the earlier 'The New Observer' to The Weekly Observer. So it is now the TWO for short.

TWO produces hard news after the Tuesday and Thursday weekly beat. Also, there is enough number of soft news stories that make the paper interesting. Friday is the dreaded day as it is the edit deadline. At most schools elsewhere, the students chill out on their weekends, but here at IIJNM the students are working on their stories, for Monday is when the paper has to come out.

The Soft Copy (www.thesoftcopy.in)

Like TWO, the online newspaper also got new title thesoftcopy (earlier it was www.newstabs.com).

New Media students have learnt the tricks of the trade. They now know the difference between how to produce an online newspaper versus how to write for a print newspaper. In the beginning came a series of linear articles that lacked internal and related links, summary and pictures. Articles were long and would scroll down forever.

Now they know how to chunk them into different headings and into different pages if necessary. Their design skills have improved too, with new media students taking turns every 10 days to try their hand at the art of designing a web page. Every edition they add a new dimension to the website, whether it is by updating regional headlines automatically with the help of news aggregators. They are constantly enthused to keep it fresh. During the second semester, they should be producing in-depth stories that are multimedia enabled web pages.

Thesoftcopy is updated once in 10 days, ensuring that the website is dynamic, pulsating and informative.

The Beat

:: The Beat :: IIJNM Students' Monthly MagazineThe Beat is a monthly magazine brought out by the IIJNM students. The objective of publishing it is to give practical training to the students in various aspects of magazine journalism. The magazine is edited and designed by students who have chosen magazine writing as their specialization. All students contribute articles to the magazine to make it lively, introspective and interesting.

The New Observer

The third batch of students have decided to add a touch of substance to their weekly newspaper by changing its name and masthead from the earlier 'The New Scribe' to The New Observer. So it is now the TNO for short.

TNO produces hard news after the Tuesday and Thursday weekly beat. Also, there is enough number of soft news stories that make the paper interesting. Friday is the dreaded day as it is the edit deadline. At most schools elsewhere, the students chill out on their weekends, but here at IIJNM the students are working on their stories, for Monday is when the paper has to come out.

New Bangalore Online

New Media students have learnt the tricks of the trade. They now know the difference between how to produce an online newspaper versus how to write for a print newspaper. In the beginning came a series of linear articles that lacked internal and related links, summary and pictures. Articles were long and would scroll down forever.

Now they know how to chunk them into different headings and into different pages if necessary. Their design skills have improved too, with new media students taking turns every week to try their hand at the art of designing a web page. Every week they add a new dimension to the website, whether it is by updating local headlines daily, or adding a java script here and a mouse-over effect there. They are constantly enthused to keep it fresh. By the end of the semester, they should be producing in-depth stories that are multimedia enabled web pages.

NBO is updated both on a weekly and daily basis, ensuring that the website is dynamic, pulsating and informative.

The Beat

The Beat is a monthly magazine brought out by the IIJNM students. The objective of publishing it is to give practical training to the students in various aspects of magazine journalism. The magazine is edited and designed by students who have chosen magazine writing as their specialization. All students contribute articles to the magazine to make it lively, introspective and interesting.

NBO is revamped, re-energized and reinvigorated!

The sThe second batch of students produced their first edition of New Bangalore Online (NBO). Mr. Rohit Biddappa, Marketing Specialist of Cadence Design Systems (I) Private Limited launched the online magazine on March 6 2002.

Mr. Biddappa feels that "a curriculum based on hands-on experience is something very much needed in today's milieu of emerging new media technologies, and I am very happy to see that IIJNM is doing that in a wonderful way."

"New Media is here to stay and I am very happy to see that the students are working on it with so much of enthusiasm," he added.

Online magazine with a difference!

NBO differs from other students websites by producing original news content, themes and design. The class, divided into three groups, diligently worked day and night to produce fresh content. Instead of merely culling out news headlines from other news agencies, NBO produces news material based on themes related to Bangalore. Essentially, NBO tells you what makes Bangalore tick, based completely on first hand investigation and information.

The first edition of NBO had numbers for its theme. All the stories were related to numbers symbolically and literally. Consider the case of the first ever cyber police station in south Asia, or the story related to the increasing number of Bangaloreans migrating to Australia, Canada and New Zealand, or the first ever government based hotline for women, 699 5000.

In addition to theme-based news stories, NBO has other regular features that include links to journalism and Bangalore resources. The online magazine is updated regularly each day, ensuring that the website is dynamic, pulsating and informative.

The beat Launched

The beat, a monthly magazine brought out by IIJNM students, was launched on March 6, 2002 by Mr. R Devdas, senior advisor to The George Foundation.

The magazine is edited and designed by three students, who have chosen magazine writing as their specialization. All students will contribute articles to the magazine, which, in the words of the editorial team, "will introduce to readers the people, the places, and the cultural reflections of Bangalore, a city that is in a continuous process of self-discovery."

The beat has been launched with the objective of giving practical training to the students in various aspects of magazine journalism. The beat is the third publication of the IIJNM students. The other two are The New Scribe, a weekly newspaper launched last year, and the newbangaloreonline.com, a web magazine.
